Julius Saar, Pioneer of Mills County, Dies

Julius J. Saar, 89, pioneer resident of Mills and Pottawattamie counties died Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Timm, of McClelland, Iowa.

Mr. Saar had been a resident of Mills and Pottawattamie counties for over eighty years. He was born at Jefferson City, Mo., on New Year's Day, 1845, and came to Iowa with his parents when he was 8 years old. They located on the Plumer settlement in Mills county.

Mr. Saar in his earlier days was a stage coach driver and a freight wagon driver for the government. At one time he was leader of an ox-team caravan through hostile Indian territory.

One of his recollections was the shooting ducks on the present site of Bayliss park.

He was a member of the German Lutheran church.

He is survived by four sons, John of Treynor, Otto of Council Bluffs, Ed of Mineola, and Gus of Keg Creek township; three daughters, Mrs. R. C. Hopp of Glenwood, Mrs. R. H. Ingram of Logan and Mrs. William Timm of McClelland; one brother, Otto of Treynor, and one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Deetkin of Seattle.—Nonpareil.


Father of Mrs. Hopp Died on Wednesday

Julius J. Saar, 89, pioneer resident of Mills and Pottawattamie counties, died at 2:15 a. m. Wednesday, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. Timm, route No. 1, McClelland.

Mr. Saar had been a resident of Mills and Pottawattamie counties for 81 years. He was born at Jefferson City, Mo., on News Years day, 1845, and came to Iowa with his parents when he was 8 years old. They located in the Plumer settlement in Mills county.

Funeral services will be held at the Cutler Funeral Home in Council Bluffs Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock and burial will be made in the Plumer cemetery.
