Adolph J. Spethmann

The death of Adolph J. Spethmann at his home in Gretna, Dec. 2, 1947, after a week's illness removed another old settler from this community. Mr. Spethmann was born in Davenport, Ia., Jan. 7, 1868, and came to Nebraska in 1883.

He was the son of John G. and Elsie Beck Spethmann, who settled on a farm north of Gretna 64 years ago.

Mr. Spethmann married Miss Emma Treckel in Omaha, Sept. 4, 1894. Except for four years in Bennington and two years in Colorado, the rest of their married life had been spent in Gretna. For a number of years Mr. Spethmann managed the Treckel hotel, and later was active in the business life of Gretna. He was an honest and law-abiding citizen with many friends.

Mr. Spethmann was baptised Aug. 25, 1897 in the Lutheran faith. Rev. A. H. Pinkall of Omaha conducted the funeral service at the Crosby-Kunold mortuary Dec. 5. Interment was in the Plumer Settlement cemetery, Council Bluffs, Ia.

The pall bearers were Herman Spethmann, Frederick Spethmann, Papillion; Adolph Spethmann, Lysle Spethmann, Millard; John Lutz, Springfield and Wallace Deerson, Elkhorn.

Besides his wife, Mr. Spethmann is survived by one son, Glen of Sioux Falls, S. D.; one sister, Miss Theresa Spethmann, Gretna and three grand-grandchildren, Donald H., Robert E., and Mary Ann Spethmann of Sioux Falls, S. D.
