The funeral for Bernard Earl “Jack” Swanger, 88, of Bethany Lutheran Home will be Friday at 10 a.m. at McCurdy Funeral Home with the Revs. Howard Mace and David Erickson officiating.

Mr. Swanger died Aug. 10 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital.

He was born Jan. 9, 1915, in Logan. He was employed as a machinist at Union Pacific Railroad for 35 years. He was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, the Honorary Girls basketball coach for the Creighton Blue Jays, and a volunteer at Children's Square from the early '80s to 2002. He was a member of First Christian Church. He will be remembered for his generous heart, which he showed to all who shared a path in his life.

Mr. Swanger was preceded in death by his wife, June Lucille, in 1994; sons, Paul Wood and Dennis; and grandson, Lonnie Wood.

Survivors include daughters, Patricia May of Sarasota, Fla., and Mary Hance of Foresthill, Calif.; sons, Bernie of Council Bluffs and Bill of Treynor; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Plumer Settlement Cemetery near Glenwood.

Memorials may be offered to Children's Square USA or to the First Christian Church.
